It’s very natural for marketers to focus  on Google. It’s very important in terms of search engine traffic for many web sites and online businesses. Nevertheless, a new study by Forrester Research reminds us that Google is not the only player in town. In their  study, Forrester found that while Google has the largest loyalty factor at 20 percent of searchers, there is still a good 55 percent of users  who will use more than one search engine per week.

According to the study, 69 percent of people use Google at least weekly, compared to 50 percent for Yahoo, 18 percent for AOL, and 14 percent for Microsoft. Surprisingly, what this study shows is that brand loyalty to any  search engine is quite low. The  Forrester study was based on a  survey of more than 4,800 U.S. online adults and  their search habits. As well, the activity was self-reported, not observed. Read more about the study from Adweek.

So what does that mean for a marketer? While efforts in Google should continue as they have, it is important not to ignore Yahoo! Even with their recent trouble, Yahoo! is still an important player for search and your advertising plans. Even more importantly, the other search engines can be great for targeting niche audiences at a bargain. Make sure you review your marketing plan and ensure you have a clear strategy with search engine beyond Google.
